untitled (4/2019)

Over the past few months, my painting process has evolved to include almost as much reduction as addition of paint. I find myself at the sink, deliberately scrubbing away to reveal hidden places and depth. But where did this process come from? What happened recently to inspire a reductive element to my paintings?

The answer came to me as I walked back from my morning caffè: The entrance to our new apartment is a portico decorated with medieval frescoes, beautifully preserved, but deteriorating. I’ve been looking at them every day for the past several months – No wonder their influence has shown up in my work!

(My apologies for the unavoidable shadow.)
